How We Remove Earwax

Microsuction

The safest and cleanest way to remove ear wax from moderately blocked ears is the microsuction method. A probe is gently inserted then connected to a vacuum pump to suction out the excess wax from the ear canal.

Water Irrigation

This is safer, gentler and more effective technology than the old “syringing” method.
With water irrigation, body temperature (37°C) water is used to flush debris out of the ear canal at a low pressure.
It’s ideal for removing larger quantities of ear wax.

Manual Removal

If you only have a small amount of ear wax that’s built up near the entrance of your ear canal, manual removal is the best option. For this, a variety of tools may be used to safely remove wax from the ear canal.

Microsuction And Ear Syringing In Birmingham

Microsuction is generally well tolerated. Sensations and comfort levels vary between individuals.

Treatment often takes 10-15  minutes, though complex cases may take longer depending on how close the ear wax is to the eardrum.

Some patients benefit from softening drops post procedure but generally drops are not required.  If the audiologist feels drops may benefit post procedure they will advise and book you for a second appointment free of charge.

Microsuction is often preferred because it is a dry procedure, unlike traditional water-based ear irrigation. The most appropriate method of earwax removal is always determined following an individual clinical assessment. Microsuction may reduce certain risks associated with water-based irrigation for some patients, as ear irrigation can increase the risk of ear infection due to the introduction of water into the ear canal.

Microsuction is a widely used and clinically accepted method of earwax removal. NICE guidance recognises multiple appropriate techniques, with the choice based on individual clinical findings. We see children over the age 5 for ear wax removal.  It is always performed by our experienced audiologists due to the the smaller diameter of the ear canal in children

Microsuction is ideal for patients with a previous history of perforations who could not previously have water irrigation due to having a hole on the eardrum.  It is the A widely used and clinically accepted method when appropriate to remove debris or keratosis inside the ear canal.  It is also the preferred method with anyone with a history of  infection, operations, or perforations of the eardrum.
